Cheese and Vegemite Scrolls
Delicious as a quick and easy breakfast or lunch on the go or a yummy snack, these Cheese and Vegemite Scrolls are a hit with our children at Imagine Childcare and Kindergarten Cranbourne. Thank you to Chef Janice for sharing the recipe with us!
Ingredients
- 300 g (2 cups) self-rising flour
- 90 g butter chilled, roughly chopped
- 150 ml (150g) milk
- 2 tbs butter (or margarine), for spreading
- 5 tbs Vegemite
- 80 g cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius (fan-forced).
- Grease and line a 23cm round, springform baking tin with baking paper, and set aside until needed.
- Sift the self-rising flour into a bowl.
- Add the butter and rub into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- Add the milk and mix gently until the mixture forms a dough.
- Knead the dough, on a lightly floured cutting board, until smooth.
- Roll the dough into a long rectangular shape, about 1 cm thick.
- Spread the butter and then the Vegemite over the dough, leaving a 1cm border.
- Grate the cheese before sprinkling it over the Vegemite.
- Starting from the long edge of the rectangle, roll the dough firmly into a log.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the roll into 3-4 cm slices.
- Place the slices, cut side up, into the prepared tin.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden. The scrolls will sound hollow when tapped once baked.
- Leave the scrolls to cool in the tin for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Meet Chef Janice
Hi my name is Janice or as the children love to call me “Miss Jan”. I have been working at Imagine Childcare and Kindergarten Cranbourne as Head Chef since we opened on January 2020.
I feel so supported as part of the Imagine Cranbourne team. I am passionate about cooking because it gives me a sense of purpose. I have worked in the food industry for over six years and I enjoy the feedback and love for the children each day. Imagine Cranbourne is my home away from home.
As a Chef, it makes me happy when I see the children enjoying and loving each of their meals. I prepare meals with the goal to increase children’s vegetable acceptance and intake. Our menus are seasonal, and full of colour and flavour.
We offer barista service, where families come through in the morning, order their coffee and we have a quick chat before they start their day. I personally believe that this incentive showcases the commitment we have to build firm relationships with our families.
One of the highlights of my role is to promote health and nutrition to families. I do this through my seasonal menus & cooking experiences in the classrooms, for example making falafel, fruit salad, and wraps with the children, and providing guidance about healthy eating.I look forward to meeting you all soon!
